Mindful eating means eating mindfully or consciously. In definition, it consists of directing attention to the act of eating, without haste, chewing the food well. Enjoying the sensations as much as possible and recognizing the signs of hunger and satiety in the body.
Food is the basis of everything. Let’s eat attentively or consciously!
And what does the brain have to do with it?
When you eat carefully and hasteless, you give the brain time to register the presence of food in the stomach. This produces a feeling of satiety. Thus, you can feel satisfied with eating less.
In most women’s routines, mealtime is often shrunk between commitments and chores and they end up eating in a hurry. Eating without chewing properly, enjoying the meal or noticing the body signs when eaten enough!
Satiety, is a well-being produced by the brain. It appears approximately 20 minutes after you start to eat. This time is necessary for an exchange of chemical messages between stomach and brain.
Eating without haste and with attention, enjoying the pleasure of the meal is one of the principles of conscious eating. Or mindful eating, as the concept is internationally known.
This ancient practice can transform the way you think about food and be a facilitator for healthy living.
Notice that, like most women, you’ve probably eaten something in the past few hours, right? Do you remember everything you ate? How about the feeling of eating it?
Like when working, driving, reading or using your cell phone, you are not fully aware of what you are eating!
According to Dr. Lilian Cheung, nutritionist and professor at Harvard, “a lack of awareness of the foods we are consuming – may be contributing to the national epidemic of obesity and other health problems.”
What is Mindful Eating?
Mindfulness means focusing on the present moment, while calmly recognizing and accepting your feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations. Again, quoting Dr. Lilian Cheung, “The principles of mindfulness also apply to conscious eating, but the concept of conscious eating goes beyond the individual. How you eat affects the world. We eat for total health”.
The ideal options for conscious eating are similar to the Mediterranean diet – centered on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, nuts and olive oil. But, the mindful eating technique can be applied to everything, even to a cheeseburger and chips!
By really paying attention to the foods you eat, you will start eating less of these types of foods.
In essence, mindful eating means being fully aware of your food – while you buy, prepare, serve and consume it.
